Twitter Basics
Here’s the shortlist of things you should do to make twitter enjoyable:
-
DON’T – Only tell what you’re doing
- Telling everyone all the details of your existence is a great what to make enemies in strange places. So instead link to videos, photos, and share websites with great content and they’ll love you.
-
DO – Use A Twitter Client
- We’ll be honest, the website alone is boring. Most active users have programs for their desktop or mobile device. This brings new life and easy functionality to the service. There are lots, so run a search or ask someone for a recommendation.
-
DO – Speak the language
- No matter what language you use to send messages (or tweet), there are some terms you need to know to connect with people (or tweeple). First you’ll notice the trend of adding TW- to english words to form twitter lingo. This is nerdy and doesn’t always attract the opposite sex, unless you’re at a twitter meet up (or a tweetup).
-
DON’T – Be impatient
- There are many schemes promising you twitter fame with thousands of followers in a few days. If you put out good info you will grow your community naturally. Remember it doesn’t matter how many people you speak to if none of them are listening.
-
DO – Use #hashtags
- Hashtags are simply abbreviations that begin with the hash symbol (“#“). This helps other users track discussions happening all over the globe. For instance, people tweeting about Michael Jackson use the hashtag #MJ and the tag for the Bangkok Tweetup is #bkktweetup. This feature also makes knowing what the rest of the world is talking about easier and the twitter search more powerful.
-
DO – Re-Tweet (or RT)
- This is resending good messages from the people you’re following. This is a great way to not only share content, but to grow your following.
-
DON’T – Miss Helpful Websites
- There are thousands of websites that improve the functionality of twitter. They can help you track tweets, increase your following, raise money and about anything else you can imagine.
